The Toyota Cheetahs inside centre was named as the backline marshal in the absence of Damian Willemse.

Steyn becomes the first Cheetahs player to start at flyhalf for the Springboks since Johan Goosen.

Nienaber said that Steyn is just a much more experienced version of Willemse.

“To us, Frans is just an older version of Damian. They are both versatile utility backs, and Damian ended up at flyhalf because of various circumstances. And now Frans has got there by a similar route.

“One must remember that Frans Steyn is Damian Willemse, but with 70 more Test caps and more than 10 years of experience.

“Frans played a lot of his rugby here in Durban, so he knows the stadium quite well, so if there's a wet-weather game, he's a nice guy to have in the team.”

The other change to the starting XV is at flank with Pieter-Steph du Toit replacing Franco Mostert.

Saturday’s Test in Durban kicks off at 17:10.
