Sirgel named as Griquas Player of the Year─── MORGAN PIEK 07:58 Tue, 07 Feb 2023
The Griquas flanker, Hanru Sirgel, was the big winner during the union’s awards function honouring the achievements on the field during the highly successful 2022 season.
The Griquas experienced one of their best seasons to date by reaching the Currie Cup final for the first time in 50 years, but fell short with a 26-19 defeat to the Pumas in Kimberley.
Sirgel was named the Griquas Player of the Year while also picking up the accolades for the Player's Player of the Year and the Forward of the Year awards.
Sango Xamlashe, who captained the Griquas in the Currie Cup final last year, was named the Backline Player of the Year.
The lock, Derik Pretorius, received recognition for his stellar season by being named the Newcomer of the Year.
Sirgel told OFM Sport that he was shocked to receive the accolades, but getting the recognition from his peers stood out above the rest.
"I'm really grateful and honoured to have received these accolades at our awards ceremony," said the live-wire flanker.
"I was quite shocked. But it's not really the recognition that stands out for me. It's more knowing that I played my part, did what was expected of me, and helped the team achieve the goals that we set for ourselves.
"Obviously, getting recognition from my peers - that one was quite massive - just knowing that the boys also thought I had quite a good season and that I gave everything that I had.
"I would definitely say that the Player's Player of the Year award is the one that meant the most to me."
Lana Hendriks was named the Griquas Women’s Player of the Year.
The Griquas will begin their 2023 Currie Cup campaign on 11 March when they tackle the Toyota Cheetahs in Kimberley.
