Sharks claim bonus point victory over the Lions─── KAYLA BARKER 18:56 Sat, 18 Feb 2023
The Sharks return to winning ways with a 29-7 victory over the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon in their local URC clash. After losing to the Stormers in their previous URC clash today’s bonus point victory was a welcomed win for the Sharks.
A win for the Sharks today increases their hopes of making the playoffs in their United Rugby Championship campaign. Currently the Sharks have 33 points and stand in 8th on the log with two other local teams ahead of them, namely the Bulls in 6th and the Stormers in 2nd.
The game got off to a slow start even though both teams were desperate for a win. Curwin Bosch secured the first try of the game in the 26th minute as well as added a conversion thereafter, putting the Sharks in the lead.
The Lions entered the game hoping to make their home advantage count and fought back, securing their opening try in the 33rd minute via Marius Louw shortly after the Sharks flanker, Vincent Tshituka was dealt a yellow card. This 50/22 was all the difference for what later would prove to be the Lions only fighting chance. Gianni Lombard then secured the conversion bringing the game to a 7 all tie at half-time.
The second half saw early domination from the visitors as Thaakir Abrahams dotted down the try line less than 10 minutes in. It was only up from there for the Sharks as Bosch secured the conversion as well as a penalty. Substitute hooker Fez Mbatha and Grant Williams further contributed to the team's success with tries taking the team to a bonus point victory.
Curwin Bosch was the star of the game as he contributed 14 of the Sharks’ 29 points adding a try, three conversions and a penalty.
Next up in their URC campaign, the Sharks prepare to face Munster next weekend while the Lions will want to bounce back when they host Glasgow next week Saturday.
