The mobile lock who is contracted by the Cheetahs missed the start of the 2023 Varsity Cup on Monday as he is still finalising his rehabilitation for an Achilles injury.

This saw the star fullback, Litha Nkula, take charge of the team on Monday night in their hard-fought 26-25 win over Tuks in Pretoria.

Mahlasi told OFM Sport that his team's win has inspired him as he continues his rehab.

“An Achilles injury is not the easiest thing to come back from, but I've been working really hard on my rehabilitation and I think that I’m in a really good position now,” said the mobile second-rower.

“I'm looking at two to four weeks before I can start playing again, but hopefully I will be able to join the team training sessions in the next fortnight.

While the Shimlas made do without the services of their inspirational captain, his return to the field will certainly be a major boost the team.

If all goes well Mahlasi could be back as soon as the match against Wits in Bloemfontein on 6 March.

On Monday the Shimlas face the North West University Eagles in Potchefstroom in round 2.
