Victory to the Sharks in Bloemfontein | News Article
James Venter

The Cheetahs took on the Sharks on Friday afternoon, the 21st of April, in Bloemfontein at the Toyota Stadium. After a brilliant fightback, the Cheetahs efforts fell narrowly short as the Sharks claimed the 24-17 victory.

The first-half saw early dominance from the Sharks who managed to carry this spirit all the way to half-time. This secured the visitors a 17-0 lead over the Cheetahs going into the break.

Sharks captain, James Venter, led from the front in their victorious run. Making way by means of a break and then distributing the ball, Venter ensured the scoreboard was opened by flanker, Tinotenda Mavesere in the 9th minute while hooker Fez Mbatha touched down in the last minute. Both tries were converted by Lionel Cronjé who also secured a penalty goal for the Sharks in the 29th minute taking them to their 17-point lead.

The Sharks had a good hold on the attack as well as on defence, which proved necessary entering into the second half of the game when the Cheetahs came in guns blazing.

The Toyota Cheetahs were looking to overhaul their visitors and fought hard to get their stamp on the board early on. Flanker, Sibabalo Qoma did just that when he secured the first try of the second-half, as well as the first try of the game for the home team. Soon after, Gideon van der Merwe touched down and with this try being converted by Ruan Pienaar, the Cheetahs managed to put 12 points down, closely within reach of their opponents.

Player of the Match, Yaw Penxe, paved the way for replacement Marco de Witt to secure another try for the Sharks, extending their lead. From here they managed to keep the enthusiastic Cheetahs at bay.

Plagued by errors, the Cheetahs only managed one more late try by Louis van der Westhuizen but unfortunately it was not enough to bridge the gap. The home side had to settle for a near narrow loss in their 7th game of the Currie Cup tournament.

For the Sharks who were recently defeated by the Bulls, a win was welcomed with open arms. Today’s win secured their third place on the log while the Cheetahs also remain in second.

The Sharks will take on the Griquas next week while the Cheetahs will be at home to the Griffons.
