Blitzboks bounce back against Fiji─── KAYLA BARKER 23:38 Fri, 12 May 2023
The Blitzboks took on Fiji in their second Pool C game at the Toulouse Sevens in France. After a disappointing opening game, losing to France, the Blitzbokke made a comeback with a 24-7 win over the Fijians.
Bouncing back from their major loss to France, the South Africans managed to keep their Olympic qualification dreams alive.
Despite challenging weather conditions, they made use of their chances, executed strong defence and fully pursued a win and it proved to pay off.
For the Blitzboks to qualify for the last spot at the Olympics, they’ll need to make it to the semi-finals. Securing a win against the USA in their final pool game can better their chances, especially if France manages to beat Fiji as well.
Playing against Fiji, the Blitzboks opened the scoreboard early and took a 12-0 lead into half time, the exact opposite of their opening game experience. Dewald Human touched down first followed by Mfundo Ndlovu.
The second half saw the Fijians tighten up their discipline leading to a try from Waisea Nacuqu. The Blitzboks kept up their strong attack and tries from Shilton van Wyk and Ricardo Duartee stretched their lead to the 24 points that secured their win.
South Africa will face the USA at 13:49 on Saturday afternoon in their must win final pool game.
