The Toyota Cheetahs centre, David Brits, has confirmed that he will be leaving the team when his contract expires at the end of October.

Brits will be heading back to Stellenbosch where he will be linking up with the Springbok Sevens setup.

Brits has been with the Cheetahs for the past two seasons after joining the team from the University of Stellenbosch Maties, where he captained them in the Varsity Cup.

The 26-year-old midfielder will fill the same role in the Blitzboks team as that of Ruhan Nell and Dylan Sage before they moved on.

Brits told OFM Sport that playing for his country is first prize and while the Blitzboks will have to qualify for next year’s Olympics Games in Paris, he will still need to prove that he is good enough to go to the global showpiece.

“I'm really looking forward to that challenge and giving it my all,” said Brits.

“I want to see what I can do with the opportunity that I have been presented with. I cannot wait to be involved in that system.

“My first year out of school we were based in Stellenbosch with the Western Province institute. We saw them training every day and I always admired their work ethic and comradery as a squad. The way that their whole squad is together is pretty special.

“At the end of the day it is rugby and this time it is a matter of representing your country. I cannot think of a better opportunity and a better life to be living than to be playing a game I love and to be doing it for your country. That's pretty special.

“Obviously I still need to make the team and that's why I haven't thought too much about the Olympics.  I know I need to prove my worth and work my way into the team, but the Olympics would be a special achievement. Every sportsman would like to represent their country at the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, it also confirmed that the Blitzboks have offered the Sevens legend, Rosko Specman, of the Griquas a contract as well.
