Griquas snatch last minute victory over WP─── KAYLA BARKER 17:21 Fri, 02 Jun 2023
The Griquas took on the Western Province on Friday afternoon, the 2nd of June, in Kimberley in round 13 of the Currie Cup. Climbing to victory from a 5 point deficit in the last 10 minutes of the game, the Griquas snatched a 38-29 win over WP.
WP led the game at half-time, keeping the home side in a 5 point deficit heading into the second half. WP’s Marcel Theunissen dotted down in the 5th minute giving the visitors an early lead.
Three minutes later, Griquas’ Dylan Sjoblom ensured the home side did not fall too far behind as he secured a lineout try.
In what looked like a back and forth fight, WP dotted down shortly after again when scrumhalf Paul de Wet secured a try. With another try from Theunissen, the visitors led at the break with three tries to two and 14-19 on the scoreboard.
Earlier this afternoon the Currie Cup official twitter page reported that “It was all drama in Stellenbosch last year when the Griquas snatched victory in the final minutes,” followed by questioning whether the men from Kimberley get one over WP again when they meet today.
It was all drama again today as the Griquas dominated the second half fighting for their victory. Despite being bolstered by URC players, WP fell short to the home side as they claimed the win.
A few minutes in, good work from flank Thabo Ndimande alongside flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela ensured possession over the tryline. A conversion from George Whitehead then ensured they took the lead on the scoreboard.
The Griquas denied the visitors multiple times in the second half ensuring the score remained at a narrow difference. However, WP’s Willie Engelbrecht put the side back in the lead in the 60th minute.
Sango Xamlashe later stunned and fought hard to put the home side back in the game shortly after he walked onto the pitch. Along with Whiteheads strong conversion rate, kicking 13 points for the Griquas as they pursued the win.
