The Pumas coach, Jimmy Stonehouse, has labelled the Toyota Cheetahs as the favourites to win Saturday’s Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein.

The Pumas are the defending champions and they will be seeking to win just their second title, while the Cheetahs have their sights set on a seventh Currie Cup.

In their last encounter the Cheetahs managed to break their three-match losing streak against the Pumas with a 29-14 win in Nelspruit.

Stonehouse told OFM Sport that all the pressure will be on the Cheetahs, especially at home.

“There is a big, big target on their back as well,” said Stonehouse.

“They play in the ECPR Challenge Cup and they are a bigger union with bigger sponsors, so there is a bigger target on their backs.

“If they cannot make it in their own stadium with home advantage and all those spectators there will be a massive target on their back, and that will put a lot of pressure on them.”

Meanwhile, the Pumas have some welcome news in their camp with the important openside flanker Franna Kleynhans is fit and available for Saturday’s final.

Kleynhans left the field in Durban during the 26-20 semi-final win over the Sharks with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

The strong ball-carrier is however fit after receiving what was just a stinger to the shoulder.

Stonehouse, told OFM Sport that Kleynhans has an important role to play, especially as the Cheetahs will pose a threat with their loose-forwards.

“Franna is ready and there is nothing wrong with him. He has a stinger on his shoulder, so we gave him a rest. He has recovered very well and is ready to go.

“We need him, if you look at their quality, it is in their loose-forwards. For that we have to have Franna ready.

“We are looking forward to that encounter, because there are two Pumas among the Cheetahs loosies in Jeandré Rudolph and Daniel Maartens.”

Saturday’s final at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein kicks off at 16:00.
