The world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, is the champion of Wimbledon for the first time in his promising career.

On Sunday the 20-year-old Alcaraz brought an end to Novak Djokovic's 10-year reign at Wimbledon with a thrilling five-set victory in the final, to become just the third Spanish player to win the men's singles after Manual Santana (1966) and Rafael Nadal (2008, 2010).

This was only the fourth tournament on grass for Alcaraz and before the Grand Slam, he won the Queens Club tournament as well. He now has six ATP tour wins for the season.

Alcaraz needed four hours and 43 minutes on court to beat Djokovic 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6 and 6-4 for his second Grand Slam title.

Initially, it appeared that Djokovic was on his way to an eighth time at Wimbledon after breezing through the first set, however, the US Open champion, Alcaraz, won a very important tiebreaker in the second set to boost his confidence.

From there Alcaraz managed to turn the tide with a clinical third set to set the tone for his brilliant win.

The new Wimbledon champion said this is what he has always dreamt about and to win it against one of his boyhood heroes was even sweeter.

“It was so good to win but even if I would have lost, I would have been really proud of myself,” said the new gentlemen’s singles champion at SW19.

“Making history in this beautiful tournament, playing a final against a legend of the sport. For me, it's incredible.”

“It was unbelievable to play in these stages. It’s amazing for a boy, 20 years old, I didn’t expect to reach this situation really fast. I am really proud of myself, I am really proud of the team and the work we put in every day to be able to lift this trophy.

“After the first set, I thought, ‘Carlos, increase the level - everyone would be disappointed’.

“I have to congratulate Novak, it was amazing to play against him. You inspire me a lot. I started playing tennis watching you. Since I was born you were already winning tournaments. You said 36 is the new 26 and you make that happen. It’s amazing.”

Meanwhile, on Saturday Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic beat Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-4 and 6-4 in the ladies' singles final, to become the first unseeded player to win Wimbledon.
