Moodie to seize the opportunity─── MORGAN PIEK 08:29 Thu, 03 Aug 2023
The 20-year-old winger, Canan Moodie, is looking to impress on Saturday when the Springboks face Argentina in Buenos Aires.
The teams in South America will be the Springboks last before the squad to play in the Rugby World Cup in France will be announced next week.
Moodie burst onto the international scene last year, but has enjoyed limited time on the park for the Springboks this season.
Moodie earned a start against the Pumas and he wants to use this opportunity to secure his ticket to France.
The young flyer said they expect the Argentine to launch and aerial bombardment, but he is geared for the challenge.
“It’s Test match rugby, so anyone would expect that,” said Moodie.
“We’ve done our analysis and Kurt-Lee and Cheslin have told me about what Argentina’s kicking game is like.
“Fortunately for me, those guys played against Argentina last week so they got a bit of a feel for it. Kurt-Lee is here with us, so they gave me a nice insight and info on how they contest in the air, for example, and how we can chase and receive kicks.
“So I think that will help me a lot with my preparation for the week. It helps with how we can identify space and play into it.”
He added that a solid performance this weekend can secure his place in the World Cup squad, however, he only wants to focus on the Pumas for now.
“I’m not nervous at all - whatever happens, happens. I am just focused on making the most of the opportunity I have this weekend.
“We still have the opportunity to fire a shot and hopefully put our names in the squad. So for me, it’s about using the opportunity I have on Saturday to play.”
Saturday’s Test between the Pumas and World Champions in Buenos Aires kicks off at 18:00.
