In the opening game of the four-round tournament the Peacock Blues edged the Currie Cup runners-up with a 21-19 after leading this game 14-7 at the half time break.

The scrumhalf, Bobby Alexander, hooker Gustav du Rand and fullback Cameron Hufke all scored tries for the visitors from Kimberley. Hufke was also on debut for the Griquas.

Phiko Sobahle in turn scored a brace of tries for the Pumas while the former Leopard, Jeandré Leonard also crossed the whitewash.

In the second match, the host for round one, the Griffons earned a 40-20 win against the Leopards from Potchefstroom trailing 20-19 at the half time break.

The outside back, Domenic Smit scored a hat-trick of tries for the Purple People Eaters, while the hooker, HP van Schoor, scored a brace. Carel-Jan Coetzee and Keanu Vers also scored for the hosts.

The Leopards tries were scored by Chris Vermaak, Lloyd April, Wihan Nel, Duncan van Vuuren and Gilroy Philander.

Round two will be played in Potchefstroom on Saturday with the Griffons up against the Griquas, while the Leopards will tackle the Pumas.
