The Stormers took on the Cardiff Blues in Cardiff on Friday evening and suffered a fourth straight defeat in Europe in their URC campaign. Settling for a 31-24 defeat to the Welsh sides brings the Stormers’ tour of Europe to a disappointing close.

After recording losses to the Glasgow Warriors, Benetton and Munster and with just two wins from their six outings to date, a loss in round 6 to Cardiff sees the Stormers  currently down in 10th on the log, 1 lower than before they took on the Welsh side. Cardiff now replaces the Stormers in 9th ahead of the rest of the weekend's games.

Despite having been desperate to turn it around, it was not to be this week as the side got off to a good start with a 14-0 lead early only to fall behind just as quickly.

Unfortunately for the inaugural winners and last season’s runners up, the DHL Stormers saw themselves behind at half-time due to ill-discipline, handling errors and scrappy play. The home side managed to close the gap and fought their way to a 17-14  lead.

The Stromers did however enter the second half with a determination to fight back and so, opened the scoring with Ruhan Nel running in a perfectly weighted pass by replacement Warrick Gelant. The home side quickly fought back, working the lineout to their advantage as Mason Grady put them over the line.

Both sides had opportunities from here to pursue the win but strategic decisions from the Stormers saw them become their own worst enemies as Cardiff dominated the last quarter of the game seeing them claim the win.

Rhys Litterick scored the deciding try as the game went into overtime and Tinus de Beer clocked his fourth conversion of the game, taking Cardiff to the 7 point lead over the Stormers and ultimately sending them home with a less than satisfying result for the European tour.
