In a tricky Pool A, the Springbok Sevens claimed a 22-14 win after having led the game well at half time 17-7 despite having conceded to the Samoans in the opening minute of the game.

Samoa’s Faafoi Falaniko opened the scoring for this clash but their lead did not last long as Blitzbok, Christie Grobbelaar touched down for South Africa shortly after in the 3rd minute of the game. Thereafter South Africa’s lead remained strong as both Rosko Specman and Shilton van Wyk scored tries in the first half. 

The Pacific Islanders conceded a yellow card in the 6th minute and were reduced to six men with Malakesi Masefau off the field. 

Despite this, the Samoans opened the scoring in the second half with Taunuu Niulevaea touching down and Pelasio Samuelu Niuula converting taking the Pacific Islanders up to 14, 3 behind the Blitzboks.

The Blitzboks quickly caught fire again and a try from Impi Visser sealed the deal.

The Springbok Sevens now turn their focus to their next Pool A game against Canada at 12:58.
