Cape Town Sevens drought continues for Blitzboks─── KAYLA BARKER 16:29 Sun, 10 Dec 2023
The Springbok Sevens team looked to break their 8 year drought in the Cape Town leg of the HSBC Sevens Series this weekend and after being bundled out by the Aussies earlier on Sunday this dream slipped away.
Following up last week’s victory in Dubai with another victory this week was another motivating factor but unfortunately for the Blitzboks, they were caught off guard by the Australians tactics.
The Blitzboks have not been able to claim the HSBC SVNS Cape Town Cup since 2015 and looked at redeeming that this year. Falling out in the playoffs puts the side in contention for fifth place instead.
SA Rugby Mag reports that the Blitzboks captain Selvyn Davids, voiced his disappointment at not being able to pull through this weekend saying;
“We are disappointed. We haven’t done well in Cape Town for a while. We tried to change that, but we couldn’t.”
“There isn’t a lot to say, but we just need to stick together. It’s not the end of the world. There are still six tournaments left. There are still games left to play today so we must just stay focused,” Davids added.
The Springbok Sevens will come up against New Zealand on Sunday afternoon at 16:52 in the fight for fifth place.
