There is a strong possibility that Test rugby could make a return to the City of Roses for the first time since 2022.

The last time the Springboks played a Test in Bloemfontein was when they were beaten 13 -12 by Wales right at the end. This Test on 9 July 2022 was an historic won as it was the first time in history that the Dragons managed to beat the Springboks in South Africa.

In 2023, there was very little Test rugby played in South African as it was a Rugby World Cup year and for the most part, the Boks played abroad.

Of the 13 Tests played in 2023, only two were played in South Africa with the Boks beating the Wallabies 43-12 in Pretoria and edging Argentina 22-21 in Johannesburg.

Thus far, six Tests have been confirmed in South Africa for 2024 - two Tests against Ireland (Pretoria and Durban), two Tests against the All Blacks (Johannesburg and Cape Town), one Test against Argentina (Nelspruit), and an historic Test against Portugal.

The venue for the Test against Portugal has not been confirmed yet, but there are strong indications that the Wolves will face the World Champions, South Africa, in Bloemfontein. There are certain requirements that still need to be met by Free State Rugby, but they are the frontrunner. However, there is a strong push to have the game hosted in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

It is understood that Georgia was considered as an opponent, but Portugal overtook the Georgians in the world rankings.

The Portuguese are certainly a rising minnow of world rugby, and they were hands down the surprise package at the recent Rugby World Cup in France. They will come to South Africa charged up and excited to face the Boks.

This Test is scheduled for 20 July 2024, and the venue will be confirmed in due course.
