Stormers claim Challenge Cup Victory─── KAYLA BARKER 13:12 Sun, 17 Dec 2023
The DHL Stormers took on La Rochelle on Saturday afternoon at the DHL Stadium and claimed a momentous and narrow 21-20 victory over the reigning champions.
Manie Libbok brought it home at the last minute for the Stormers as he held his nerve to convert Andre-Hugo Venter’s 79th minute try. Nailing a wide-angle attempt and pushing the Stormer’s one point above the visiting side saw the hosts victorious.
The nail-biting try from the flyhalf, Libbok, was also reminiscent of his goal-kick in the final second of their game against Ulster booking the Stormers spot in the inaugural Vodacom URC final.
The game was tough for the home side as they trailed by 7 points at the end of the first half. The game was a constant struggle as both sides kept piling on the pressure and for the Stormers, having missed many chances and needing to catch up to the reigning champions with little time left, the win was definitely a sweet victory.
Early into the second half, the Stormer’s were behind by 11 points but a hard fight and tries from Ben Loader and Andre-Hugo Venter, a penalty goal from Libbok as well as the nail-biting last minute conversion took the Stormer’s over the edge to claim the win.
Speaking to Stormer’s coach John Dobson after the match, SA Rugby Mag reports he stated how special the win is for the team.
“It was a very special win. As much as we won it in the last second, I do think we deserved to win that game. We had so many opportunities we didn’t take, but we did well to win."
“For us to beat them, I think we made it hard for ourselves today because we got five 22-metre entries in the first half with no return. I think it’s a statement that we have some depth here and are heading in the right direction. I think we are in a good space now.”
