The Bulls earned a bonus point win at Ellis Park on Saturday to complete a Jukskei derby double against the Lions in the United Rugby Championship.

The Bulls beat the Lions 25-10 in Johannesburg after leading the contest 5-3 at half time.

The Springbok Cannon Moodie scored an unconverted try to hand the Bulls the lead at the break.

In the second forty minute period, the replacement hooker, Akker van der Merwe as well as Marcell Coetzee scored for the visitors from Pretoria.

With about ten minutes remaining on the clock, Quan Horn scored a converted try for the Lions to give them a sniff at fighting back.

However, David Kriel, struck back for the Bulls for the bonus point try, but this score will remain a topic of debate as there did not seem to have been enough control of the ball in the process of grounding it, however, the TMO Marius van der Westhuizen though otherwise.

On the stroke of full time the Lions went over the line for what could have been a second try, but referee AJ Jacobs deemed the ball was held up.

The Lions did miss opportunities to score with Nohamba missing two penalties, while a Richard Kriel try was not awarded because of a forward pass. That was a potentially 13 points they lost out on.

The Bulls next fixture is on 2 March against the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld. On the same day the Lions will be at home to the Sharks.

Scorers:

Lions: Try – Quan Horn Conv. – Jordan Hendrikse Pen. – Nohamba

Bulls: Tries – Canan Moodie, Akker van der Merwe, Marcell Coetzee, David Kriel Conv. – Johan Goosen Pen. – Goosen
