“All-in-all, I think there were a lot of positives to take out of and we're just going to keep building on that.”
The Toyota Cheetahs want to build on their performance from the weekend as they continue to prepare for the upcoming SA Cup.
On Saturday, the Griquas edged the Cheetahs 25-22 in Jacobsdal in a warm-up that yielded a lot of positives.
The Griquas secured their third straight win in the warm-ups, while for the Cheetahs it was their first outing without a lot of their star players such as Ruan Pienaar, Reinhardt Fortuin and Dan Kasende, just to name a few.
The Cheetahs coach, Izak van der Westhuizen, said they must just continue building.
“It was a good first game, especially playing against guys that were playing in their third warm-up,” said Van der der Westhuizen.
“So, I don't think it was too bad.
“All-in-all, I think there were a lot of positives to take out of and we're just going to keep building on that.”
On of the most pleasing aspects of the the warm-up game what that the Cheetahs played more of an expansive game, which is typical to their DNA. The seldom used the forwards play regarding mauls which has been successful in the past.
Of the Cheetahs four tries against the Griquas, three were scored by backs with Rewan Kruger, Abner van Reenen and Sibabalo Xamlashe scoring. Gideon van der Merwe was the only forward to score a try.
Next week Friday at 18:00 the Cheetahs will host Hawies Fourie’s Boland Cavaliers in Bloemfontein in the first round of the SA Cup.
