The Blitzboks have cruised into the semi-finals of the Perth Sevens in Australia after delivering their best performance yet Down Under.

On Saturday, the Springbok Sevens team defeated an ill-disciplined Fiji side 19-0, setting up a semi-final clash against the hosts, Australia, on Sunday.

South Africa’s victory was particularly impressive – especially after their narrow 19-17 loss to defending champions Argentina earlier in the day during their final Pool A match.

The Blitzboks outclassed Fiji with a brilliant and dominant defensive effort and were clinical on the attack when opportunities arose, created through relentless pressure.

The Blitzboks took the lead in the second minute when Shilton van Wyk scored after stringing several phases together, which piled the pressure on the Fijians. Ronald Brown added the conversion to secure a 7-0 lead.

From the restart, Selvyn Davids collected the ball and executed a neat grubber, which he managed to dot down. Although the conversion attempt was unsuccessful, the momentum remained firmly with South Africa.

The second half continued in the same vein, with the Cape Town champions maintaining their intensity and frustrating the Fijians. Fiji conceded two yellow cards, with the second infringement resulting in a penalty try to South Africa. A quick counter-attack created space for Nortjé near the try-line, but he was tackled illegally from an offside position, preventing him from scoring.

This was enough for South Africa to see out the match against a team that has, on many occasions in the past, gotten the better of them.

On Sunday, South Africa will face the hosts, Australia, in the semi-finals. This game will kick off at 09:27. The other semi-final will be contested between Argentina and a high-flying Spain, with kick-off at 09:05.

Scorers:

South Africa: Tries – Shilton van Wyk, Selvyn Davids, Penalty try Conv. – Ronald Brown
