Veteran Toyota Cheetahs loosehead prop Schalk Ferreira, is making the most of every moment on the field as he nears the end of his playing career.

The 41–year–old is set to feature this weekend in the SA Cup clash between the Cheetahs and the Border Bulldogs It will be his first game since facing Eastern Province earlier in the season.

Ferreira has already indicated that he’s beginning a gradual transition into coaching, but told OFM Sport that, for now, he’s still relishing every opportunity to play. “I don’t know what you're talking about – this body… I feel like I’m peaking right now,” Ferreira joked.

“I haven’t played in four games – EP was my last one. But the coaches and fitness staff really look after me, and I’ve been staying in top shape. They rotate us quite a bit, especially in the front row, so I’m just grateful to be back on the pitch again.

“I know that any game could be my last, and with me moving into a player–coach role, I’m looking at coaching the scrums in the future. I’ll still be on standby if the team needs me, but for now, every game is a blessing”

Ferreira said he plans to draw on his two decades of experience as a professional rugby player – which included stints with the Stormers and French club Toulouse– to help nurture young talent and possibly shape future Springboks.

“I’ve always known I’d go into coaching, especially scrum coaching. I’ve been fortunate to work under four international scrum coaches, and you learn from each of them – then add your own flavour to the mix.

“We’ve also had the privilege of working with Daan Human and Izak van der Westhuizen. Scrumming has always been a core strength here in the Free State, so for me to take on that responsibility in future is a real privilege – and something I’m passionate about.”

Saturday’s SA Cup match between the Toyota Cheetahs and Border Bulldogs kicks off at 15:00 at the Toyota Stadium.
