Toyota Cheetahs captain Chucky van der Westhuizen has welcomed the timely return of flanker Gideon van der Merwe, following a long injury layoff.

Van der Merwe is set to make his comeback this weekend in the SA Cup clash against the Suzuki Griquas in Kimberley, following six months on the sidelines due to injury.

The derby marks the first meeting between these long-time rivals in 2025, and there’s plenty at stake, with a home semi-final spot still up for grabs in the SA Cup. Mathematically, the Cheetahs still have a shot at securing a home play-off, but it’s a tall order against the defending champions.

The ever-reliable loose forward, Van der Merwe, is fully fit and recovered from an ankle fracture. He is primed for a return against his former team.

His presence at the breakdown has been sorely missed, and Van der Westhuizen told OFM Sport that Van der Merwe offers even more than just his on-field skill.

“Yes, it’ll make a massive difference to have him back – he brings a lekker vibe to the squad as well. He’s solid on defence, sharp at the breakdowns like you said,” said Van der Westhuizen, who recently extended his contract with the team for another two years.

“He brings a bit of fire to the team, makes good reads, and has a proper never-say-die attitude – so it’s really great to have him back.

“He’s been training with us for two or three weeks now, and you can already feel the energy and see the impact on defence. It’s definitely lekker having him back.”

It also looks likely that another former Griqua, James Verity-Amm, will retain the number 15 jersey after his standout performance against the Border Bulldogs. Michael Annies picked up an ankle injury in that match, and Cohen Jasper, who was rested last week, is expected to shift from fullback to wing.

At this stage, it’s still unclear whether George Lourens will continue at flyhalf or if new signing Tiaan Swanepoel will make his first start. While dropping Lourens would be tough after two strong performances in the past fortnight, the Griquas will undoubtedly pose a far greater challenge.

A change at lock is also expected after Carl Wegner sustained an injury, which appears to be his hip. This could pave the way for the former Griquas captain Pieter Jansen van Vuren to start in the second row.

Saturday’s derby between the Griquas and Cheetahs at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley kicks off at 15:00.
