The Toyota Cheetahs captain, Victor Sekekete, will run out for his 100th game for the team on Friday when they face the Suzuki Griquas in Bloemfontein in a crucial Currie Cup clash.

The former Junior Springbok lock joined the Cheetahs from the Griquas in 2020 and went on to lead the side to the 2023 Currie Cup title.

One of the standout qualities about Sekekete is his durability — he has rarely been sidelined by injury during his time at the Cheetahs and has consistently been one of their most reliable players.

Sekekete told OFM Sport that five years ago he would never have imagined playing 100 games for the Cheetahs, let alone captaining them to a Currie Cup championship.

“No, not at all — the least I can say is it’s a dream come true,” said Sekekete.

“When you walk into the changerooms and see the names of legends who have played here, it’s very inspiring. That motivates me every time I run out. It’s been a huge driving force for me and my family throughout this journey. I’m very grateful.”

On his longevity, Sekekete explained that it comes down to looking after his body, with the full support of his family.

“I couldn’t be happier. I’m very grateful because not many players can say the same. A lot of guys struggle with injuries, but I’ve found a way that works for me — and my family has always helped me with that.

“When I was still at the Griquas, you had to take responsibility for yourself, focus on your body, and make sure you were available for selection. One coach always said, ‘Availability is the best ability.’ That stuck with me. For me, it’s always been about staying available and giving my best in training.”

Meanwhile, exciting Grey College flyhalf Darius Erwee joined Cheetahs training on Tuesday after recently signing with the franchise. Erwee etched his name into Grey folklore earlier this year with his standout performance in their famous 26-25 victory over Paul Roos in Bloemfontein.

At the start of the season, Erwee wasn’t the first-choice flyhalf for Grey’s 1st XV, but he quickly made the number ten jersey his own. He linked up with the Cheetahs’ backline this week, and while still a youngster, his talent and potential are clear. His debut seems only a matter of time.

Cheetahs assistant coach, Tiaan Liebenberg, who has worked with Erwee for years, told OFM Sport they are thrilled to welcome him into the setup.

“He’s had a wonderful year. I’ve known Darius since grade eight and coached him at under-14 level, so I’m very excited for him — it’s well deserved.

“We spoke during the week and were delighted that he decided to sign with the Cheetahs. We just wanted to give him a taste of the environment and show him what we’re about. He was all smiles today.”

Liebenberg added that head coach Frans Steyn felt it was the perfect time to introduce the youngster to the professional setup.

“Frans felt it was a good time to bring him in and show him how things work here. It’s about giving him some exposure to what professional rugby really is. He’ll probably be back again on Thursday. I hear they’ve got their forty days tomorrow and then they’re done with school.

“I was just worried I might get a call from Braam van Wyk (Grey Headmaster) asking where he is, but Frans made the arrangements.

“It’s really just to give him a taste of professional rugby, to show him what the Cheetahs are about, what our culture is, and how we do things. Above all, he must just enjoy it and get a feel for what it’s like in the big world.”

Kick-off between the Cheetahs and Suzuki Griquas is on Friday at 17:00 at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
