The exciting Suzuki Griquas scrumhalf, Caleb Abrahams, has been linked with a loan move to the Stormers for the start of the United Rugby Championship.

Earlier this week, the former South African Schools player made his move back to Kimberley permanent, having previously been on loan from the Bulls. Abrahams, a Kimberley native who matriculated at the famed rugby factory Grey College in Bloemfontein, has been representing the Currie Cup finalists on a loan deal from the Bulls during the current campaign.

The signing of the player was a major coup for the Peacock Blues as he has been linked with talks with some of the bigger teams in South Africa, and even the Springbok Sevens teams.

This week, he signed a two-year contract with the Griquas – but he has now been offered the chance to play in the URC on loan for the Cape Town-based franchise. This comes as another Grey Old Boy, Cobus Reinach, is currently with the Springboks and will only join the Stormers after the conclusion of the Rugby Championship.

Reinach was the Stormers big signing during off season after the son of the late Free State and Springbok great, Jaco Reinach, had been playing his rugby overseas since 2017 where he played in 76 games for the Northampton Saints in England, and in 87 matches for Montpellier in France.

Earlier in the week, Abrahams, named in the starting XV for Saturday’s final in Johannesburg, told OFM Sport that he is thrilled to be back in Kimberley, describing it as home.

“Yes, I'm so happy and excited to stay here, because my heart is here,” said Abrahams.

“I’ll always be grateful to the Griquas staff and Coach Piet Bergh for giving me this opportunity. Every time I step onto the field, they can expect nothing less than my absolute best and 100% effort.”

While the loan deal is on the cards for the rock-solid halfback, OFM Sport can confirm that a final decision will only be made after Saturday’s Currie Cup final against the Lions in Johannesburg.

An insider at the Griquas told OFM Sport that the final needs to be settled first, and the loan would only cover the first few rounds of the European-based competition.

For now, the focus is entirely on Saturday’s blockbuster at iconic Ellis Park, where the Griquas will be aiming for their first Currie Cup title since 1970.

Kick-off for Saturday’s final between the Lions and Griquas is at 15:00.
