Du Plessis excited to return to Bloemfontein─── MORGAN PIEK 12:32 Sat, 11 Oct 2025

The 25-year-old flyhalf Zander du Plessis is eager to get his chance at the Toyota Cheetahs as the team focuses on the upcoming Toyota Challenge and EPCR Challenge Cup in Europe.
Du Plessis, who was the starting flyhalf for the Suzuki Griquas in the 2022 Currie Cup final in Kimberley, has joined the Cheetahs after previously representing the Lions in the United Rugby Championship as well.
He is no stranger to Bloemfontein, having attended the renowned rugby school Grey College, and represented Free State at age-group level. After school, he joined the University of Pretoria’s Tuks side and represented the five-time Varsity Cup champions.

Renowned for his big boot off the tee, Du Plessis set the Varsity Cup record for the most points in a season by an individual with 157 points, helping Tuks to claim the title in 2021.
The Cheetahs struggled in the 2025 Currie Cup with injuries at flyhalf, using four different players in the position. In just the first four rounds, they relied on Ethan Wentzel, Tiaan Swanepoel, Clayton Blommetjies, and Franco Smith, with all but Blommetjies sustaining injuries during the campaign.
Apart from his well-educated kicking boot, Du Plessis offers the Cheetahs versatility, capable of playing at flyhalf, inside centre, and fullback.
Du Plessis told OFM Sport that he is excited to get stuck in after returning to where it all began for him.
“Yes, it’s great to be back in Bloemfontein – the place where it all pretty much started for me,” said Du Plessis.

“I think it’s a great opportunity, and I obviously know how much the Cheetahs mean to the people of Bloemfontein and the Free State. So, I’m super excited to get going and contribute to the team.”
It remains to be seen whether Du Plessis will get a run-out for the team this Friday when they face Black Lion of Georgia in the first of two games in the Toyota Challenge.
Friday’s clash between the Cheetahs and Black Lion at Toyota Stadium is set to kick off at 18:00.
