Smith starts at flyhalf against Black Lion─── MORGAN PIEK 12:58 Fri, 24 Oct 2025
The Toyota Cheetahs have made a handful of changes to their team for Sunday’s Toyota Challenge game against Black Lion in Bloemfontein.
It will be the second and final game of the series, and the Cheetahs will want to bounce back in emphatic style after losing the first match 39-38 on Friday. Coach Frans Steyn has refrained from making wholesale changes, opting instead for a few positional switches and some rotation from the bench.
Hooker Chucky van der Westhuizen will captain the team from the front row, which remains unchanged.
In the second row, Juan Venter starts at lock alongside Victor Sekekete.

The back row sees one change, with Sisonke Vumazonke wearing the number eight jersey at the expense of Neels Volschenk.
In the backline, the most notable change is at flyhalf, with Franco Smith Jr getting the nod to wear the number ten jersey, while at inside centre, Zander du Plessis earns his first start for the Cheetahs after debuting off the bench last week.
Among the outside backs, Ntokozo Makhaza starts on the left wing, and Michael Annies shifts to fullback, with Cohen Jasper rotating to the bench.
There is one debutant among the replacements, with Junior Springbok Tebogo Nkosi coming in as cover at loosehead prop. Arno van der Merwe and Clayton Blommetjies, who both started the first game, are on the bench, while the fleet-footed James Verity-Amm makes his return from injury.
Coach Steyn said it’s important that the team cuts out the individual errors this weekend, as it’s something that has lingered since the Currie Cup.
“It wasn’t good enough, and we should never have put ourselves in a position like that,” said Steyn.

“As Chucky said earlier, there were a lot of individual errors, and even through the Currie Cup, we spoke about that repeatedly. On the weekend, it really cost us, and hopefully we can fix that on Sunday.”
Van der Westhuizen told OFM Sport that it’s not about revenge, but rather about rectifying things – and that starts with limiting individual errors.
“I had a wrestling coach who once said, ‘An angry mind is a narrow mind’,” said the Namibian international.

“We don’t want to play narrow-minded rugby. Obviously, there are things we have to step up on physically, and areas we need to sort out in our 22 defence, and so on. We’ll fix those, focus on our game, limit individual errors, and we’ll definitely be better.”
