The Suzuki Griquas have received a welcome boost ahead of their SA Cup third-round clash against the Border Bulldogs in Kimberley on Saturday.

The Currie Cup-winning winger Dylan Maart is back with the Peacock Blues following a loan spell at the Stormers in Cape Town, adding firepower to an already dangerous backline.

The prolific try-scorer linked up with the Mother City outfit after the 2025 Currie Cup final, where the Griquas stunned the Lions 27–25 at Ellis Park to lift the world’s oldest domestic trophy for the first time in 55 years. In the final Maart more than played his part with several potential try-saving tackles down the touchline.

During his stint with the Stormers, Maart proved he can hold his own at a higher level, featuring both locally and abroad in the United Rugby Championship and the European Champions Cup. His pace and finishing ability were on full display, further underlining his growing reputation.

In his absence, Sako Mako and Connor Mahoney have stepped up impressively on the wings. Both players have been outstanding in the opening two rounds - a dominant 101–7 win over the Leopards in Kimberley and a convincing 51–12 victory against the Valke at Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.

That form once again highlights the Griquas’ biggest strength: their depth and competition for places across the park.

It remains to be seen whether Maart will feature as early as Saturday. He confirmed to OFM Sport that he only resumed training with the squad on Monday, making it too soon to say if he’ll be match-ready for the clash against the East London outfit.

Maart has also been linked with a short-term move to the Bulls, after the Stormers opted against making his stay in Cape Town permanent.

Meanwhile, the Griquas’ other Currie Cup-winning winger, Gurswin Wehr, could also be nearing a return. Wehr has been back in Kimberley for some time following a successful stint in England with Sale Sharks in the Premiership.

It’s understood that Wehr has been observing the mandatory eight-week rest period required during the season, meaning his comeback could be just around the corner.

Saturday’s encounter between the log-leading Griquas and the second-from-bottom Bulldogs at Suzuki Stadium kicks off at 15:00.
