Bloemfontein is set for a massive boost as one of South African rugby’s most recognisable figures prepares to pull on the orange jersey.
DoubleRugby World Cup winner Faf de Klerk will officially join the ToyotaCheetahs, bringing star power and serious pedigree to the Free State.
The experienced Springbok scrumhalf has signed a two-year deal and is expected to arrive in June 2026, making Bloemfontein his new rugby home. It’s a landmark signing for the Cheetahs – one that signals real intent as the franchise looks to strengthen its standing on the big stage.

De Klerk, known for his fiery competitiveness and fearless approach, has built a reputation as one of the game’s elite number nines. With over 60 Test caps for the Springboks, he’s been a central figure in South Africa’s golden era, playing a crucial role in their back-to-back Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023.
His career has taken him across the globe, with standout stints at Sale Sharks in England and most recently with Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan. Wherever he’s played, De Klerk has left his mark – whether through his relentless defence, sharp tactical kicking, or rapid service at the base of the ruck.
Among his many highlights, De Klerk started in both World Cup finals, helped the Springboks to a memorable series win over the British & Irish Lions in 2021, and earned a nomination for Premiership Player of the Season during his time in England. In Japan, he continued to showcase his class, consistently ranking among the top scrumhalves in the competition.
