The Suzuki Griquas have received a significant boost ahead of their Currie Cup title defence, with powerful loosehead prop Eddie Davids returning to Kimberley after a successful stint with the Lions in the United Rugby Championship.

The Peacock Blues will begin their quest to retain South Africa’s oldest domestic rugby trophy next month, and the return of Davids adds valuable depth and experience to their front row.

Davids spent the past season with the Lions, helping the Johannesburg-based franchise reach the URC playoffs for the first time. During his time at franchise level, he tested himself against some of the best players in the northern hemisphere and gained invaluable experience in high-pressure matches.

Adding to the excitement in Kimberley is the arrival of experienced winger Stefan Coetzee, who has also joined the squad ahead of the new campaign.

The last time Davids pulled on the famous Peacock Blues jersey was in the dramatic 2025 Currie Cup final against the Lions at Ellis Park. On that memorable afternoon, Griquas held their nerve to claim a thrilling 27–25 victory courtesy of a late penalty, securing the Currie Cup title for the first time in 55 years.

Since then, the Bloemfontein-born front-rower has continued his development at the Lions and believes he returns to the Northern Cape as a more complete player.

“Playing in the United Rugby Championship with the Lions has been an incredible experience for me,” Davids told OFM Sport.

“It’s a very high level of rugby, and being part of a team that reached the playoffs for the first time was something really special. I’ve learned a huge amount from the coaches, players, and the overall intensity and standards at that level.

“Coming back to the Griquas is something I’m genuinely excited about. I feel like I’m returning with a lot more experience, especially in my set-piece work, decision-making, and handling pressure in those big matches. I want to bring that into the group and contribute wherever I can.

“We also had a great campaign last year, winning the Currie Cup, and the goal is to build on that success and win it again. That’s the standard within the group now, and it’s something we all want to chase. At the same time, I’m really looking forward to being back with the guys, reconnecting with the team, and getting stuck in again.”

Coetzee’s arrival further strengthens the Griquas squad. The 34-year-old veteran boasts an impressive rugby résumé and brings a wealth of professional experience to the backline.

The former Paarl Boys’ High standout previously had a brief spell with Griquas before moving to the Toyota Cheetahs in 2015. His career has since taken him across South Africa and abroad, representing the Sharks, Southern Kings, Seattle Seawolves, Pumas and, most recently, Newcastle Red Bulls in England.

His experience could prove invaluable as Griquas attempt to defend their crown in what is expected to be another fiercely contested Currie Cup campaign.

With key players returning and experienced recruits joining the squad, optimism is building in Kimberley. Griquas have set the benchmark after ending a 55-year wait for Currie Cup glory, and the challenge now is to prove that last season’s triumph was no one-off achievement.

The defending champions will launch their 2026 Currie Cup campaign on 18 July when they travel to Cape Town to face the Stormers.
