Following his stint with the Sale Sharks in England, Wehr hasn't quite been able to reproduce the form he displayed during the team's successful Currie Cup and SA Cup campaigns in 2025. However, his hat-trick against the Bulls in Kimberley last week suggests he is well on his way back.

Wehr and scrumhalf Bobby Alexander each crossed the whitewash three times in the 56-26 demolition of the Bulls, while the pair also combined brilliantly for several of the tries.

With Cameron Hufke set to miss Friday’s derby against the Toyota Cheetahs, Wehr’s current form will be even more important. Ironically, Hufke sustained his injury while setting up Wehr’s opening try against the Bulls during what was his 50th appearance for the Peacock Blues.

The good news for the Griquas is that the tall speedster Stefan Coetzee is expected to return for the derby after recovering from the niggle he picked up against the Stormers in Cape Town during the opening round of the Currie Cup.

Following the important win in Kimberley, Griquas coach Pieter Bergh told OFM Sport that he is delighted to see Wehr showing signs of returning to his best and believes there is still plenty more to come.

“Gurswin had a slow start - we haven’t seen the best of Gurswin, so hopefully he can kick on now,” said Bergh.

“I think the last 30 minutes was the Gurswin we all know and we all love. Hopefully that gives him a lot of confidence and now he can just go forward from here.”

Griquas captain Albert Liebenberg, in turn, told OFM Sport that he is thrilled for Wehr and believes the team’s unwavering support for one another has played a big role in the winger’s resurgence.

“We’re focused on players motivating one another,” said Liebenberg.

“We want to tell a guy, ‘We believe in you. That’s the reason you’re in the team. You need to perform.’

“A guy like Gurswin was a little bit down, but tonight he was on fire again.

“I think he believed that because the players believed in him, and that’s a big thing.”

Meanwhile, the Griquas and Cheetahs will battle it out in the OFM Cup Challenge on Friday. Besides being one of South African rugby’s fiercest rivalries, the match carries significant weight in the Currie Cup as the competition approaches the halfway mark of the round-robin stage.

Bergh told OFM Sport that the Cheetahs have shown clear improvement and believes the influence of Faf de Klerk has already made a noticeable difference.

“I think it will be a massive game - you can see the difference Faf de Klerk has made at the Cheetahs,” Bergh added.

“He brings energy, he brings a lot more, and he brings calmness to that group. You can see they almost look like a totally different team than the one we’re used to over the last few months.

“So it’s going to be a challenge, but one we’re looking forward to. We have a good record at home, especially against them, and with it being a Friday evening, I think there’ll be a lot of people here.

“We know it’s one of those games where if they win, they’re 10 points ahead of us. If we win, we’re almost tied on the log.

“So it’s a big game and, yeah, every game is a must-win game from here on.”

Friday’s OFM Cup Challenge at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley kicks off at 19:00.
