South African sides face challenging round in the URC─── MORGAN PIEK 09:29 Fri, 23 Oct 2026
The four South African teams will be looking to strengthen their positions in the United Rugby Championship this weekend, with a challenging fourth round featuring two away fixtures and two home encounters.
The Sharks and Lions are in action on Friday night, while the Bulls and Stormers will take to the field on Saturday as the battle for places in the top eight intensifies. The Sharks face Cardiff at Cardiff Arms Park at 20:45 on Friday, with the Lions meeting unbeaten log leaders Edinburgh in Scotland at the same time.
On Saturday, the Bulls host Ulster in Pretoria at 13:45 before the Stormers welcome the Scarlets to Cape Town at 16:00.
The Sharks, currently fifth on the standings, head to Wales after an encouraging 40-33 victory over Lyon in France in the EPCR Challenge Cup.
Having won two of their opening three league matches, the Durban side will be eager to maintain their momentum against a Cardiff team sitting just one place below them.
Cardiff have also claimed two victories in the URC but will be desperate to respond after consecutive defeats against Leinster and Northampton Saints. The Welsh side have shown defensive resilience, meaning the Sharks will need to make the most of their attacking opportunities.
The Lions face an even tougher assignment against an Edinburgh side that has won all three of its opening URC matches.
The Johannesburg outfit will also be playing with heavy hearts following the tragic death of teammate Hyron Andrews ahead of their European fixture in France last weekend.
Currently seventh, the Lions will be determined to honour Andrews with a strong performance and protect their place in the top eight. However, Edinburgh’s ability to grind out results in tight contests, combined with their impressive defensive record, makes the Scottish outfit a formidable opponent.
The Bulls, third on the log, will enjoy home advantage when they take on Ulster at Loftus Versfeld. The Pretoria side have recorded two league victories and suffered one narrow defeat, and their confidence will be high following a commanding 56-20 European victory over Stade Français.
Ulster, meanwhile, have endured a frustrating run in the URC, drawing their last two matches against Glasgow Warriors and Munster. However, a convincing 40-21 win over Zebre Parma in Europe will give the Irish visitors renewed belief.
The Bulls will look to use their attacking firepower and home support to secure another valuable victory as they pursue a fourth consecutive appearance in the URC final.
In Cape Town, the fourth-placed Stormers will be favourites against the Scarlets, who occupy 12th position. The hosts have beaten Connacht and the Sharks in the league before making a statement in Europe with a 49-12 demolition of Bristol.
The Scarlets will nevertheless arrive with confidence after consecutive victories over Benetton and Newcastle. Having recovered from narrow defeats earlier in the campaign, the Welsh visitors will be determined to continue their climb up the standings.
For the Stormers, protecting their unbeaten home record and remaining among the league’s leading sides will be key priorities.
With valuable log points on offer, all four South African teams face important tests as they look to consolidate their positions and keep their ambitions for the remainder of the URC season firmly on track.
