Kwagga becomes a Bull─── MORGAN PIEK 09:46 Sun, 25 Oct 2026
The Bulls have secured a major boost to their forward pack with the signing of Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith on a three-year contract, adding a proven winner, relentless work rate and trademark physicality to an already formidable back row.
Smith, a two-time Rugby World Cup winner, brings a wealth of international experience and a never-say-die attitude to Loftus Versfeld. The 33-year-old was part of the Springbok squads that lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in 2019 and 2023, establishing himself as one of the most dynamic and hard-working loose forwards in world rugby.
Capable of playing at both No 6 and No 8, Smith combines explosive athleticism with an exceptional ability to win turnovers and disrupt opposition attacks. His fearless approach and refusal to take a backward step have made him a valuable asset to the Springboks.

Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann is particularly pleased to reunite with Smith, having previously coached the loose forward during their time together at the Lions.
“As a youngster, he showed character, fight and integrity. He’s a team man who has grown into a stalwart, and it’s been a privilege to watch his career unfold and establish himself as one of the best back rows in world rugby. Wherever he goes, he makes a difference, and I look forward to him contributing both on and off the field,” said Ackermann.
Smith’s rise to the top began in rugby sevens, where his speed and explosive running made him a standout performer. He won Commonwealth Games gold with the Blitzboks in Glasgow in 2014 before adding an Olympic bronze medal at the Rio Games in 2016.

He subsequently carried those qualities into the 15-man game, making his mark with the Lions. Smith was part of the Johannesburg-based side that won the Currie Cup in 2015 before heading to Japan in 2018.
He has spent the past eight years playing for Yamaha Júbilo, now known as the Shizuoka Blue Revs, while remaining a regular presence in the Springbok set-up. With more than 60 Test appearances to his name, his international achievements also include the Springboks’ 2021 series victory over the British & Irish Lions and Rugby Championship titles in 2019, 2024 and 2025.
However, Smith’s journey has not been without its challenges. In May 2026, he suffered a serious knee injury while playing for the Blue Revs, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus. The injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season, but he has since received medical clearance to resume playing at the end of December.

Smith is eager to begin the next chapter of his career in Pretoria and says his rehabilitation is progressing well.
“I’m very excited to be joining. I’m already jogging. I miss the rugby, but I’m feeling good. My wife is pregnant and due in January, so the timing of joining the Bulls is perfect. Playing under Johan Ackermann previously was one of my best experiences. I’m looking forward to getting back by early next year.”
Bulls chief executive Edgar Rathbone believes the experienced loose forward will bring far more than his considerable ability on the field.

“Kwagga is a proven winner who has achieved just about everything the game has to offer, and he has never lost his hunger. His work rate, physicality and fearlessness are exactly what we want in Bulls colours. He will drive standards inside our group, and our supporters will love the way he plays,” said Rathbone.
Smith’s arrival adds another layer of quality and experience to a Bulls back row already packed with talent. His ability to make an impact at the breakdown, carry strongly in traffic and bring relentless energy for the full 80 minutes should make him a valuable addition to Ackermann’s plans.
With his recovery progressing and a return targeted for early next year, Bulls supporters will be eagerly anticipating the arrival of a player whose commitment, intensity and winning mentality have become hallmarks of his game.
