Banyana to fine-tune World Cup preparations against Jamaica─── 11:28 Sat, 06 Apr 2019
South Africa have an ideal opportunity to fine-tune their Women's World Cup preparations on Sunday when they play an international friendly against Jamaica at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium (start at 3pm).
Apart from Sunday's match, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis will get another chance to prepare for the World Cup with the team also set to tackle the United States in Los Angeles next month.
Ellis says facing the Caribbean side will be a valuable exercise for the team.
“We have a similar history to Jamaica – their men’s team qualified for their first Fifa World Cup in France in 1998, just like Bafana Bafana and now we also make our debut at the tournament, just like their women’s national team, also in France.
“The players are revved up as it is 67 days away from the World Cup and they can't wait for it to get underway.
"Even though we have not been together, players have been training as we have given them schedules to follow. Some of them have also been playing matches and taking part in tournaments.
Banyana will be making their debut at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was a key venue during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
“This will be the second time we play at a World Cup stadium as we also had a game in Cape Town earlier this year as the fans came out in number.
“We hope Durban fans will also come to the stadium and give us a morale boost in our farewell match.
“The last time we were here in this city was in 2011 qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics and we won against Tunisia.”
