History made in European football─── 07:35 Fri, 10 May 2019
The finals of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League make history this year.
At the start of the second leg of both of the UEFA Champions league semi-finals, it just about seemed the writing was on the wall. Barcelona took a 3 nil lead into their second leg against Liverpool, while Ajax took an away goal 1 nil lead against Tottenham Hotspurs. Neither of these leads would be enough!
Two incredible comebacks within 24 hours of each other saw Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-3 to qualify for the final and Tottenham beating Ajax 3-2 to make it an all English encounter in the Champions League Final, only the third one in the history of the competition.
It doesn't stop there. Arsenal booked a spot in the Europa League final when they beat Valencia 4-3. The second semi-final saw Chelsea fight hard to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 on penalties after the teams played to a 1 all draw in regulation and extra time.
Why is this important?
For the first time in the history of the UEFA competitions, both finals will be contested by English teams. Europa will see an Arsenal vs Chelsea, London Derby, on the 29th of May and the UEFA being contested by Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs on the 1st of June.
