The preliminary draw for the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 was conducted on Monday and highlighted by regional derbies as Africa’s journey to the next edition of the global football showpiece gets underway.

The draw featured the 28 lesser-ranked teams and pitted Burundi against Tanzania, two of the teams that participated in the just-ended 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Both teams failed to go past the group stage, but it was Burundi who made a bigger statement on their continental debut.

Other regional derbies are Botswana versus Malawi, Mauritius against Mozambique, and the all-West African affair between neighbours Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Deputy General Secretary, Anthony Baffoe, assisted Khaled Nassar of the Competitions Department to conduct the draw at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The two-legs will be held between September 2-10, with the winners joining the 26 top-ranked teams for the group stage.

South Africa is one of 26 teams that will not play in the preliminary round. The other teams with a bye are Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Cape Verde, Uganda, Zambia, Benin, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Madagascar, Niger, Libya, Mauritania, Kenya and Central African Republic.

The fixtures:

Ethiopia v Lesotho
Somalia v Zimbabwe
Eritrea v Namibia
Burundi v Tanzania
Djibouti v Eswatini
Botswana v Malawi
Gambia v Angola
Liberia v Sierra Leone
Mauritius v Mozambique
Sao Tome e Principe v Guinea-Bissau
South Sudan v Equatorial Guinea
Comoros v Togo
Chad v Sudan
Seychelles v Rwanda
