Football one step closer to playing behind closed doors─── MORGAN PIEK 10:06 Mon, 06 Apr 2020
Football leagues in Europe may be able to resume in May in order to complete the current season, and in a further step in the direction of games being played behind closed doors, UEFA, has lifted some restrictions.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic football like all other sporting codes has been put on ice.
The English and Scottish Football Associations have been granted permission to remove the traditional 15:00 blackout by European football's governing body.
This may allow for the respective seasons to be completed, albeit behind closed doors.
In a statement, UEFA confirmed that they have lifted the blocked hours protection.
“Taking into account the current exceptional circumstances, UEFA has lifted the 'blocked hours' protection granted to the UEFA Member Associations for England and Scotland for the remainder of the 2019/20 football season, following requests from the relevant National Associations as a result of measures taken in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
On Friday it was confirmed that professional football would not resume until next month and the restart date will be a matter of constant review.
In England the title race is pretty much a done deal as the league leaders, Liverpool, require just two more wins to secure the season. Should the English Premiership not be able to continue, the Reds will miss out on a first league title in 30 years.
