Ten years since the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicked off─── MORGAN PIEK 13:25 Thu, 11 Jun 2020
Thursday marks 10 years to the day since the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicked off in South Africa.
The showpiece was a historic event for not only South Africa, but the continent as it was the first time a Football World Cup was contested in Africa.
While Bafana Bafana didn’t manage to advance past the group stage, they were able to stun France in Bloemfontein, and Peter Drury’s commentary as Siphiwe Tshabalala scored against Mexico has gone down in footballing folklore.
"It's a really good ball. It's Tshabalala! Goal Bafana Bafana. Goal for South Africa. Goal for all of Africa. Jabulela, rejoice. Bafana Bafana have popped the first cork”, an elated Drury shouted.
Bloemfontein was witness to another epic game when the European giants, England and Germany, clashed in the City of Roses.
The far superior Germans won the game 4-1 and bundled the English out, but the game will be long remembered for Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal which could have swung the tide.
Even the legendary Rolling Stones frontman, Mick Jagger, was in attendance for the encounter in the Free State.
Spain went on to win the World Cup thanks to a 116th minute Andrés Iniesta goal against the Netherlands in the final.
