Celtic midfielder Mashikinya tests positive─── MORGAN PIEK 09:36 Tue, 23 Jun 2020
The Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder, Given Mashikinya, has become the second Premier Soccer League player to test positive for Covid-19.
Last week the Orlando Pirates midfielder, Ben Motshwari, announced that he had recovered from the virus after testing positive in late May.
According to Celtic, Mashikinya is asymptomatic and that his health has remained in a good state.
As was the case with Motshwari, Mashikinya will go into self-isolation over the next two weeks.
The player was diagnosed during the PSL’s routine round of testing ahead of the resumption of training.
The club confirmed the news of the former Cape Town City player in a statement.
“Bloemfontein Celtic can confirm that after we have conducted COVID-19 tests on Friday 19 June 2020, one player (Given Mashikinya) tested positive.
“The player was and still in asymptomatic and he is currently in isolation for the next 14 days.
“In accordance with relevant protocols, the NHI has been notified of the case by the club.
“We urge everybody to continue practicing safe and healthy measures to contain and stop the spread of the virus.”
Meanwhile, in the Western Cape, three staff members of Stellenbosch FC tested positive. None of the Stellies players returned a positive result.
All players and staff at the 32 clubs that make up the top two divisions in South Africa must undergo COVID-19 tests as part of government directives to allow teams to train. The PSL is waiting on the government to give the green-light for matches to return.
