Domestic football to resume next weekend─── MORGAN PIEK 17:26 Mon, 27 Jul 2020
Domestic football in South Africa will officially resume their matches on 8 August after the Premier Soccer League got the green-light from the South Africa Football Association and the ministry of sport.
The resumption of the sport will kick-off next week Saturday with the Nedbank Cup semi-finals which will be contested in a bio-secure bubble.
At this stage, there is no confirmation where this may be, however, the PSL is meeting later in the week in order to iron out a few remaining issues.
This news was announced on Monday afternoon by the chairman of the PSL, Irvin Khoza.
Following the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, the remaining league teams will have to report to the bio-bubble a day prior to their league fixtures.
During an urgent press conference on Monday, Khoza announced the welcome news.
“This is a historic moment. At this point in time, I can gladly announce that the 8th of August is a definite goal for the Absa Premiership and GladAfrica Championship.
“We are resuming on the 8th of August. The first games will be the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, and the last game will be the Nedbank Cup final.
“It's all systems go.”
The Nedbank Cup semi-finals will see Wits up against Mamelodi Sundowns, followed by Bloemfontein Celtic vs. Baroka FC.
The times and venue for the semi-finals are yet to be confirmed.
