Alexander scores late equaliser against Chiefs─── MORGAN PIEK 08:52 Thu, 13 Aug 2020
A late goal by Wits last night denied Kaizer Chiefs of an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier Soccer League standings as the match ended in a one-all draw.
The scoring at the Orlando Stadium was opened in the 36th minute when the Serbian striker, Samir Nurkovic, found the back of the net for the Amakhosi with a perfectly executed header.
Cole Alexander scored the equaliser for the Clever Boys in the 90th minute.
Wits coach, Gavin Hunt, believes they let this one slip through their fingers.
“We're very disappointed,” said the outgoing tactician.
“I thought we should have won the game. With everything that's gone in our lives, the football club, the players, myself, it looks like it was against us again.
"I felt we really had them, similar to Saturday, you know, you've got to score, we had great chances tonight, certainly the better ones and that one at the end, from our pressing we hit the post, but you know it's been the story of our season. If we had a 15-goal striker, we would have won the league by now.
Chiefs coach, Ernst Middendorp, admitted that even if it was their first game in five months, they had a chance to win it.
“It was our first game in five months.
“I think I we messed it up in certain moments in the first half. Sometimes when we counter-attacked, when we had this transition, say four against three or five against three, we have to make more out of it. I think that is the dilemma we have to discuss.”
Tomorrow Chippa United host Cape Town City and Highlands Park face Mamelodi Sundowns.
