Ntseki sacked as Bafana coach─── MORGAN PIEK 12:31 Wed, 31 Mar 2021
The Bafana Bafana coach, Molefi Ntseki, has been sacked by the South Africa Football Association.
This comes after the national side failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations which is set to be played in January and February next year.
Molefi’s axing comes just 20 months into his contract of five years which saw him overseeing nine matches.
A week ago, Bafana drew 1-1 to Ghana in Soweto in a crucial AFCON qualifier, and on Sunday they were eliminated from the tournament following a 2-0 defeat to Sudan in Omdurman.
Molefi didn't make matters any easier for himself after publicly stating that he had failed as the national coach.
The 51-year-old met with SAFA on Tuesday, where he was asked to step down. Reports indicated that he hung in his heels and wanted to see out his contract which was set to expire in December 2022.
Ntseki was the 10th coach in charge of the national team over a 15-year period.
SAFA hopes to have his successor in place before their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers get underway in June. Bafana are in Group G of the qualifiers along with Ghana, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
At this stage, the former Bafana striker, Benni McCarthy has been tipped as the favourite to take over the reins from Ntseki. The current AmaZulu tactician has taken Usuthu from a club struggling to avoid relegation every season to a team that currently occupies the fifth spot in the Premier Soccer League standings.
