We have to rebuild the team to a much younger team - Broos─── MORGAN PIEK 08:35 Thu, 06 May 2021
The first mission of the new Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, will be to rebuild the national football team as he starts preparing them for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
On Wednesday, Broos, was announced as the successor to Molefi Ntseki, who in his turn was axed following Bafana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The 69-year-old former Belgium international defender has previously coached Cameroon, and he led them to the 2017 AFCON title in Gabon.
Speaking at his unveiling via Zoom, Broos, said that the current national players are too old.
“First of all I have to say that I am very proud and very happy to be the new coach of South Africa.
“It's always been a country in which I wanted to work and today I am here. So I am very happy and very proud.
“Secondly, the information that I've gathered in the last few weeks and the analysis that I've compiled has made me believe that it is now the perfect moment to rebuild a new team in South Africa.
“I was a little bit surprised when I saw the recent selections of the last few games that there were such a lot of players who were 30-years-old and older.
“I think we have to rebuild the team to a much younger team and where I can use the example of my previous experience at Cameroon, I did the same there.”
Broos will be arriving in South Africa next week. It is widely believed that the man who was replaced by Broos, Molefi Ntskei, will be appointed as his assistant in the national team.
