Japan edge South Africa in Olympic opener─── MORGAN PIEK 15:16 Thu, 22 Jul 2021
The host Japan got their 2020 Olympic Games campaign off to a perfect start in the football tournament in Tokyo.
Japan beat South Africa 1-0 in their Group A fixture.
South Africa were unable to create scoring opportunities in the game and only had a single shot on goal which went straight to the goalkeeper.
The host dominated the possession through their much more disciplined and structured play.
The deadlock was broken when the Real Madrid winger, Takefusa Kubo, scored the winner in the 71st minute.
In Thursday’s other Group A fixtures, Mexico thumped France 4-1.
South Africa will face France at 10:00 on Sunday morning.
