The need for VAR is there - Mngqithi─── MORGAN PIEK 13:40 Mon, 16 Aug 2021
The semi-finals of the 2021 MTN8 have been confirmed after Golden Arrows, Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City FC all advanced to the last four of the knockout competition.
In the first semi-final, Arrows will play host to the Brazilians in the first leg, while in the second semi-final, the Citizens are at home to the Dube Birds.
Meanwhile, the Sundowns' head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has called for the use of the VAR following their controversial penalty shootout against Kaizer Chiefs.
“The need for VAR is there. It makes a bit of a difference, but at times they even make mistakes with the aid of VAR.
“In this case, Zakhele was just there, so what is the use of bringing the linesman into that area when he's not going to be able to tell the referee that it's a goal.
“The linesman was five metres away from the situation, unlike when he is usually on the touchline, but it still went on.
“It's one of those situations, and I do not want to speak about them because I also believe we had a penalty goal on that side in the second half. But again, we have to accept that everybody makes mistakes. We also make mistakes.
“But on the penalty one, it's a bit of a sore point when our analyst receives a red card, when they look at it they will realise that they had made a mistake and these people were not shouting at us for nothing.”
The PSL has yet to confirm the dates of the first leg.
Here's Itumeleng Khune's penalty save in the shootout that everyone's talking about, with the ball having crossed the line, which ultimately led to a red card for Sundowns coach Wendell Robinson.#MTN8 pic.twitter.com/uSonnSKGZG
