The Kaizer Chiefs defender, Njabulo Ngcobo, has been called up to the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Ghana.

The Premier Soccer League's Defender of the Year comes in as cover due to injury concerns in the defence.

Mosa Lebusa of Mamelodi Sundowns and Innocent Maela of Orlando Pirates have been ruled out through injury.

The midfielder, Sphephelo Sithole, has also been ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19.

The national coach, Hugo Broos, explained that injuries in the game forced his hand to include a 24th player.

“We had a few problems, as you know with Lebusa, Maela, and Sithole, but also now Mvala had a little injury.

“Mvala will not train today and tomorrow and then we'll see and decide on Wednesday if he will be ready for the game on Friday.

“For that reason, we called the 24th player, with Ngcobo. He is here with us since this morning and we will see with Mvala.

“Maybe we will go to Zimbabwe with 24 players, that is something the doctor will decide.”

Bafana face Zimbabwe in Harare at 15:00 on Friday afternoon and Ghana at the FNB Stadium on Monday evening.
