Broos questions Ethiopia vs. Ghana qualifier in Soweto─── MORGAN PIEK 06:56 Tue, 09 Nov 2021
The Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, has questioned FIFA's decision to allow the 2022 World Cup qualifier between Ethiopia to be played in South Africa.
This comes as the pitch in Bahir Dar is substandard. Ethiopia and Ghana both requested the move to the Orlando Stadium, and this was approved by both CAF and FIFA.
Broos questioned the move as both South Africa and Zimbabwe played their away matches against Ethiopia in Bahir Dar.
“I don't understand FIFA,” said Broos.
“This is really not fair. First of all, they let two countries play in that stadium, in that location, very bad location, very bad stadium, very bad pitch.
“For Zimbabwe, it was also a very important game there, and now suddenly Ghana can play their game in a paradise.
“This is really a paradise if you compare it to Ethiopia. So, they have to travel, but it is a direct flight. This is not fair, and I don't understand FIFA.
“They approved the stadium, then two games were played in that and then suddenly it is not approved anymore?
“Is there no other stadium in Ethiopia you can find? This is a little bit surprising. That can only happen in Africa, I think. This is not fair.”
Ethiopia and Ghana will battle it out at 15:00 on Thursday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium, while Bafana host Zimbabwe at 21:00 at the FNB Stadium.
