City were on the verge of advancing to the final before a Rodrygo brace of goal on the stroke of full-time forced extra-time in the second-leg of the semi-final.

Karim Benzema then scored an extra-time penalty as Los Blancos pulled off another astonishing comeback in the competition. This resulted in the Spanish giants winning the two-legged semi-final with a 6-5 aggregate.

Real goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, lauded their fighting spirit.

“It's the story of our season,” said the shot-stopper.

“We had video before game and it's the ninth time that we've come back for a loss to win.

“We came back from another goal down and it is incredible to achieve it again.

“This team this year is amazing. We don't let our heads down - we just keep on fighting.

“That's why we are where we are and that's why Real Madrid is Real Madrid.”

Liverpool and Real will battle it out on the 28th at Stade de France in Paris in a repeat of the 2018 final.

In 2018 Real beat the Reds 3-1 at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv, Ukraine, for their last Champions League title. A year later, Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 for their sixth title.
