Banyana look to improve against Zambia─── MORGAN PIEK 15:00 Fri, 15 Jul 2022
The national women's football team, Banyana Banyana, will be targeting an improved performance when they face Zambia on Monday night in the semi-finals of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
On Thursday night, South Africa advanced to the last four of the continental football competition with a 1-0 win over Algeria in Rabat.
The victory also booked South Africa's spot in next year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, said the first mission was accomplished by qualifying for the World Cup, but she does feel that they certainly left goals out on the field and it is something that will need to improve in order to reach the final win of the tournament.
“I thought we started very well but then we stopped. We kept creating chances and as the game went on, the players felt pressure and we tried to calm them down.
“We made some team mistakes. We had so many chances that we could have just knocked in and we didn’t do that.
“They were so clear cut but at the end of the day, we showed a lot of character. But hey, we are going to the World Cup.”
Monday night's semi-final at the Stade Mohamed V stadium in Casablanca kicks off at 19:00.
