Downs braced for season opener against the Citizens─── MORGAN PIEK 13:56 Fri, 05 Aug 2022
The Premier Soccer League kicks off on Friday with last season’s two top teams going head-to-head in Cape Town.
The season kicks off with the runners-up, Cape Town City, hosting the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Brazilians will be targeting a record-extending sixth consecutive title.
Both teams have acquired several new signings for the season with Downs securing the signature of the Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams, while City signed the American winger, Jordan Bender.
The Sundowns coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has called for a more competitive season.
“Maybe if your league could be a little more intense, with a little more competition, with a lot of other teams pushing each other and pushing us, we'll have a better chance in the Champions League.
“When I see how teams have recruited, Kaizer Chiefs really improved their squad and so have Orlando Pirates. You also have Cape Town City that did exceptionally well last season.”
The action at the Cape Town Stadium gets underway at 19:30.
