The national women's football team, Banyana Banyana, are set to get year underway when they compete in the Turkish Women's Cup in this month.

Banyana's participation was confirmed and the tournament will go a long way in preparing for the FIFA Women's World Cup in New Zealand and Australia later in the year.

South Africa will be competing against Slovenia, Uzbekistan, Venezuela and Zambia in Alanya.

The national coach, Desiree Ellis, said she is happy with their opponents for the tournament.

"We are very excited to be going to the Turkish Cup," said the former national captain, Ellis.

"In our group at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, we have Sweden and Italy, who are European opposition, and then obviously we have Argentina, who are South American opposition.

"We are very excited and grateful that we will be playing an European nation in the form of Slovenia in the Turkish Women’s Cup. We also play Uzbekistan, who are Asian, and then finally a South American opponent in the form of Venezuela.

"So yes, it is a good start to our preparations and we also want to say thank you to the South African Football Association for its efforts to get us the opposition that we want in terms of European and South American sides.

"We are really looking forward to the upcoming camp and to seeing what we still need to work on, and obviously to getting ready for this big year that culminates in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand."

The 2023 Turkish Cup will be played from 13 to 23 February.
